October Tour to
Robert P. Mone Peaking Generation Plant

The October FWEC tour will be at the Robert P. Mone Plant.  This facility is currently owned by Buckeye Power, Inc. and operated by AEP.  The plant has three gas turbine generators rated at ~170 MW combining for a plant output of ~510 MW.  [By comparison, the old City Light & Power Plant (currently housing Science Central) had an output of 40 MW with three generators.  One of the 15 MW generators is still in place; the other 15 MW and 10 MW generators were removed with the 10 MW generator’s rotor at the entrance to the building.]  The Robert P. Mone Plant uses natural gas as its fuel and can react quickly to system load fluctuations.  While gas is more expensive as a fuel than coal the ability of the plant to quickly come online makes it valuable during peak operating conditions or during emergencies when power is needed.

The tour will be mostly outside as the equipment is not housed within a building.
