January Tour
Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant
Thursday, January 24th at 6:30 PM
Fort Wayne, IN

The FWEC will tour the Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant (http://www.cityoffortwayne.org/utilities/drink-water/three-rivers-filtration-plant.html).  The new Ultra-Violet system that replaced chlorine is installed and working along with other upgrades.  A fact sheet for the Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant is available (http://www.cityoffortwayne.org/utilities/images/stories/docs/Filtration_Plant_8-2012.pdf).

Tour info:  We will beet in the parking lot at the northwest corner of the Filtration plant; the lot is on the east side of Spy Run Avenue, at Baltes Avenue, just north of the St. Mary’s River.  Spy Run Avenue is a continuation of Lafayette Street; the name changes at the St. Mary’s River Bridge.

Wear closed-toe shoes with reasonable traction and dress with the expectation of being outside for periods of up to 15 minutes.  The plant is usually comfortable inside, but we’ll want to see as much as possible of the new ultraviolet construction and settling structures.  The outdoor portion will be kept to a minimum of it is very cold.

November Tour I History

The FWEC attended a presentation of the CERT program (https://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/about.shtm) at the Public Safety Academy on November 1st.  Our presenter was Matt Brokaw with the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

On Thursday, November 1, Matt Brokaw, the Allen County CERT Coordinator, presented details and answered questions for a group from the Fort Wayne Engineers Club at the Allen County Public Safety Academy.  Matt explained that the CERT program, Community Emergency Response Team, is an entirely volunteer organization of citizens who have gone through training.  Each certified member of the team has been provided with a kit consisting of a flashlight, hard hat, safety vest, pry bars, medical supplies, etc., for use during response to natural disasters.

CERT volunteers are activated during emergencies when typical first responders are overwhelmed.  The CERT team is mobilized through a telephone network notifying them of the need for assistance.  The Allen County CERT organization began in 2007 and the goal to have 10 CERT members per neighborhood has yet to be realized.  Since 2007 the Allen County program has trained approximately 300 citizens.  There are still plenty of positions available and interested persons should contact Matt Brokaw to sign up for the next training session.

November Tour II History

The FWEC attended a tour of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions (www.tss.trelleborg.com) in New Haven on November 15th.  The tour started with a presentation overviewing the history of Trelleborg and detailing the various types of seals that are used throughout common and industrial applications.  The local site started at a supplier to the International Harvester plant in Fort Wayne prior to its departure.  The FWEC toured the test, research and development side of the New Haven Trelleborg facility.  Attendees viewed the lab, seal testing area, and a small room where prototype batches of seal compound can be manufactured.  The rubber compounds are generally black due to carbon introduced in the mix; the raw rubber compound(s) are not naturally black.

Engineers’ News Past

The FWEC has a significant history; Treasurer Ryan Stark and his wife were able to find past Engineers News documents dating back to 1938!  Here is an excerpt of the past newsletter (a scanned copy of the entire newsletter is available through the FWEC website):

Engineers’ News from December 1938:

ENGINEERS DANCE ON DECEMBER 17 TO BE BRILLIANT OCCASION

Music by Jimmy Sanford

No, you won’t have to get out your stiff front shirt and tails ‘cause it’s going to be semi-formal.  In other words, the ladies will have a chance to strut their stuff and the men (God bless the committee) will be perfectly correct in their business suits.  Of course, if you insist, your tux won’t be out of place.  …  The committee promised that this affair will be a “knockout”.  They have even gone so far as to provide tables and cards for those who have tired feet and fallen arches.  Coffee and sandwiches will be served at intermission.  And all this for the small fee of only $1.25.  For new members and forgetful ones let it be known by these presents that this dance, which is the only FWEC meeting in December, is a direct result of the questionnaire sent out some months ago.  Approximately half of the members indicated that they thought at least one meeting a year should be a purely social function.

FWEC Board Meetings

The FWEC board meetings are open to any interested party within the FWEC membership.  The next FWEC board meeting will be held on Tuesday December 4th at 7:00 PM on the Indiana Tech campus in the Zollner Engineering Center room Z-204.
