Tour info:  We will beet in the parking lot at the northwest corner of the Filtration plant; the lot is on the east side of Spy Run Avenue, at Baltes Avenue, just north of the St. Mary’s River.  Spy Run Avenue is a continuation of Lafayette Street; the name changes at the St. Mary’s River Bridge.

Wear closed-toe shoes with reasonable traction and dress with the expectation of being outside for periods of up to 15 minutes.  The plant is usually comfortable inside, but we’ll want to see as much as possible of the new ultraviolet construction and settling structures.  The outdoor portion will be kept to a minimum of it is very cold.

Engineers’ News Past

The FWEC has a significant history; Treasurer Ryan Stark and his wife were able to find past Engineers News documents dating back to 1938!  Here is an excerpt of the past newsletter (a scanned copy of the entire newsletter is available through the FWEC website):

Engineers’ News from January 1939: KOPPERS COMPANY CLOSES LOCAL PLANT

It is very much like writing an obituary to describe the removal of an old Fort Wayne industry from this territory.

The Western Gas Division of the Koppers Company is closing shop here and taking part of its engineering and sales force to Baltimore, Maryland, where they will become part of the Bartlett-Hayward division of the Koppers Company.

M. H. Merritt, A. A. Azar, G.V. Middaugh, A. B. Hall and G. I. Koons have submitted their resignations to the Engineers’ Club and have already left the city for Baltimore.  Much as we regret to see them leave we extend to them our best wishes for success in their new home.

The Engineers’ Club is sincerely in accord with the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce to bring new industry to Fort Wayne to utilize the fine factory and office building s vacated by Western Gas and give employment to the several hundred persons who will be left jobless by the transfer.
