November Tour I
CERT Program and Public Safety Academy
Thursday November 1st at 7:00 PM
7602 Patriot Crossing, Fort Wayne, IN 46816
The Community Emergency Response Team is a training program for regular citizens to assist in the wake of a large emergency or disaster where traditional first response (fire, medical, etc.) would be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the emergency or disaster. The CERT program aims to train ordinary citizens how to best respond to a major disaster situation and how to help neighbors, friends, family and the community at large. The CERT program first, presents citizens the facts about what to expect following a major disaster in terms of immediate services. Second, gives the message about their responsibility for mitigation and preparedness. Third, trains them in needed lifesaving skills with emphasis on decision making skills, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. Fourth, organize teams so that they are an extension of first responder services offering immediate help to victims until professional services arrive.
The Public Safety Academy is a regional training and educational space. Emphasis is placed on technology and on-line learning using a new fiber optics network.
FWEC members should check in at the front desk, they will then be directed to the appropriate room within the facility.

October Tour History
The FWEC toured Micromatic in Berne of October 17th; and while it was lightly attended it was still very informative and interesting. If automation is you thing, Micromatic is your company. One of their two main products is automated assembly equipment. During the shop tour we got a demonstration of two different piston assembly lines. One was a more manual line that required a fair amount of operator intervention, but still placed the rings on pistons correctly, then aligned the piston to the rod, check that everything was correct and in tolerance and that just left the operator to place the piston/rod assembly in a box. The other assembly line did basically the same thing but was completely automatic. It would take a piston, turn it if necessary, attach the rod and wrist pin, check for any problems, mark it with ink indicating that it was good and then place it in a shipping cart on the other end. Micromatic supplies pretty much all of the major vehicle manufacturers with assembly lines of this sort and it’s impressive to see it in action.
The second product they make are hydraulic rotary actuators of all different sizes. For those who don’t know what that is, it basically allows any hydraulic system to have a rotary motion like a wrist or an elbow. A picture is worth 10,000 of my words, so see below. The double vane actuator provides more torque than the single vane actuator.
There are thousands of applications for this type of actuator with one of the more interesting being a rudder controller on large ships. Thanks again to Micromatic for opening up their facility and providing drinks and cookies for our club.
